Overview

This package combines a cultural immersion in the Kilimanjaro region with a classic 8-day climb via the Machame Route, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route.” Known for its scenic beauty and high success rate due to excellent acclimatization, this trek takes you through five ecological zones—lush rainforest, moorlands, alpine desert, and the snowy summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Your adventure begins with a 1-day cultural experience at either Machame Nkweshoo, Machame Nkweseko, or Lyamungo Cultural Tourism Program, where you’ll enjoy Chagga traditions, coffee tours, waterfalls, storytelling, and community interactions, before starting your trek.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cultural Experience (Machame Area)

  • Visit Machame Nkweshoo / Nkweseko / Lyamungo cultural programs.
  • Activities may include: coffee farm tour, Chagga traditional cooking, local beer making, visit to waterfalls, traditional dances, and history walks.
  • Lunch with a Chagga family.
  • Overnight in Moshi or Machame village lodge.

Day 2: Moshi – Machame Gate – Machame Camp

  • Drive to Machame Gate (1,800m).
  • Begin trek through rainforest to Machame Camp (3,010m).

Day 3: Machame Camp – Shira Camp

  • Ascend through heath and moorland to Shira Camp (3,840m).

Day 4: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

  • Trek to Lava Tower (4,600m) for acclimatization, descend to Barranco Camp (3,950m).

Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

  • Climb the famous Barranco Wall, then trek to Karanga Camp (4,050m).

Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

  • Short hike to Barafu Camp (4,640m).
  • Early dinner and rest before summit attempt.

Day 7: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

  • Midnight start for summit push via Stella Point (5,756m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
  • Descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m).

Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi

  • Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate.
  • Transfer back to Moshi for hotel overnight.

Day 9: Departure

  • Breakfast and airport transfer / onward travel.
