Overview

This package combines an authentic cultural experience in Moshi with the classic Marangu Route trek up Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania’s highest peak. You’ll begin with a full-day cultural immersion at Kinukamori Waterfall (Chagga Culture) or Old Moshi Cultural Tourism, before embarking on a 7-day trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only Kilimanjaro route with hut accommodations. It offers gradual ascents, comfortable trekking, and stunning scenery including Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut, Kibo Hut, and the summit push to Uhuru Peak.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cultural Experience (Moshi)

  • Morning visit to Kinukamori Waterfall or Old Moshi Cultural Tourism Program.
  • Activities include coffee tour, Chagga storytelling, banana beer brewing, and traditional dances.
  • Lunch with a local Chagga family.
  • Overnight in Moshi town.

Day 2: Moshi – Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

  • Drive to Marangu Gate (1,860m).
  • Begin trek through lush montane forest.
  • Overnight at Mandara Hut (2,700m).

Day 3: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

  • Trek through moorland with views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.
  • Overnight at Horombo Hut (3,720m).

Day 4: Horombo Hut (Acclimatization Day)

  • Acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks (4,000m).
  • Overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 5: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut

  • Trek across alpine desert to Kibo Hut (4,700m).
  • Early dinner and rest before summit attempt.

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

  • Midnight start for summit push via Gilman’s Point (5,681m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
  • After photos at the summit, descend to Horombo Hut for overnight.

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi

  • Final descent through moorland and forest to Marangu Gate.
  • Drive back to Moshi.
  • Overnight in Moshi hotel.

Day 8: Departure

  • Breakfast and transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport or onward program.
